Nigerian Catholic Community
The Nigerian Catholic Community is one of the ethnic apostolates of the Archdiocese of Boston and an integral part of St. Katharine Drexel Parish.
Formed in 1988 by Father Alfonsus Gusiora, the community was invited by Father Gerald Osterman to locate the Community at St. John-St. Hugh Parish, which is now St. Katharine Drexel Parish. The Nigerian Catholic Community was formed to gather the growing Nigerian Catholic population within the Archdiocese and throughout New England to celebrate both faith and culture in the manner which was customary back home.
Nigeria is comprised of many tribes, cultures, and languages. The majority of Nigerian Catholics are from the Igbo tribe. The Igbo culture heavily influences the Nigerian Mass, and other functions hosted by the Nigerian Catholic Community.
